Ordtek and N-Sea Team Up For Galloper Inspection Works

Work has begun searching for wartime ordnance on the seabed 17 miles off Suffolk at the £1.5 billion Galloper project site.

Ordtek is using its expertise to find any Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) in the area which will be home to 56 offshore wind turbines.

The company recently launched a unique Mine Map sharing information about UXO around the UK coastline using data from a variety of sources.

It shows that the Galloper site was heavily mined in the First and Second World Wars, as well being a very active British military training area.

Ordtek director Lee Gooderham: “We are delighted to be working on this important renewable energy project off our local Suffolk shoreline. This is significant and complex project for us, with considerable ordnance has previously been found at the neighbouring Greater Gabbard site.”

Ordtek has been hired by Aberdeen-based subsea services provider N-Sea to carry out the work which is likely to last a minimum of six months.

The company is a leading expert in UXO risk management. It has carried out work at more than 100 offshore projects over the past four years, including about 15 in the Southern North Sea.

The multi-support vessel Siem N-Sea will survey the turbine and cabling areas for UXO at the main site. N-Sea’s dive support vessel, Neptunus, will undertake similar work in shallow water areas.

Chief operating officer at N-Sea, Roddy James, said: “We are delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the Galloper project, which is a key part of the UK’s renewable energy portfolio.”

Galloper is due to commence operations by 2018 producing up to 336MW of power which developers RWE Innogy UK say will power the equivalent of up to 336,000 homes, with its cabling coming ashore near Sizewell.
